Mahatma Gandhi's visit in 1917 marked the beginning of the Champaran movement against indigo planters.
Gandhi was called by Rajkumar Shukla in Champaran, Bihar.
Champaran Satyagraha was held in the year 1917 in Champaran district of Bihar under the leadership of Gandhiji. This was the first Satyagraha conducted in India under the leadership of Gandhiji. The British plantation owners had made a contract with the farmers of Champaran, in which it was mandatory for them to cultivate indigo. Due to the decline in the market of indigo, factories started closing. Taking advantage of the helplessness of the farmers, the British increased the rent. As a result of this the rebellion started. Mahatma Gandhi saved the farmers of Champaran from this tyranny of the British. The result was that he became a god for the people of Bihar. Here along with him were prominent in the movement- Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Shri Krishna Singh, Anugrah Narayan Sinha, Janakdhari Prasad and Brajkishore Prasad.
