The industry is located in the town of Channapatna in the Ramanagara district of Karnataka, India. The town is also known as Gombegala Ooru (toy town). The industry was started by Tipu Sultan in the 18th century. Sultan invited Persian artisans to train local artisans in the unique art form. The artisans used ivory, sandalwood, and other materials to make toys for the royal family. The toys are made using a unique lacquerware technique. The toys are carved out of wood and coated with a colorful lacquer made from the sap of the Palmyra palm tree. The toys are finished with natural dyes that are safe for children and the environment. The industry is protected as a geographical indication (GI) under the World Trade Organization, administered by the Government of Karnataka.
