Q. Consider the following statements:
  1. Satvahana inscriptions were written in the Sanskrit language.
  2. Satvahana king ‘Hala’ wrote a text called 'Gathasaptasati'.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

Answer: 2 Only
Notes: Even though Satvahanas claimed to be Brahmanas and vouched for the Varna based top down social order but they adopted Prakrit language as their official language. Consequently, all the Satvahana inscriptions, on the rock surfaces and on the copper plates are written in the Brahmi script and Prakrit language. So, statement 1 is incorrect. Satvahana king, Hala, wrote a text ‘Gathasaptasati’ in Prakrit language. It consisted of 700 verses. But, it seems to have been finally re-touched much later, possibly after the sixth century CE. So, statement 2 is correct.
