Q. Consider the following statements:
  1. During the Mahajanpad period, Magadha's capital Rajgir was called ‘Girivraja’.
  2. During the Mahajanpad period, Kosala’s capital Ayodhya was called ‘Jaladurga’.
Which of the statements given above is/are incorrect?

Answer: 2 Only
Notes: Magadha Mahajanpad’s first capital was Rajgir and then it was transferred to Patliputra. Rajgir was called 'Girivraja' because it was surrounded by five hills and the opening through those hills was closed by stone walls on all sides. This made Rajgir impregnable, hence the epithet ‘girivraja’. Their second capital, Pataliputra was situated on the confluence of Ganga, Gandak and Son. On the fourth side, Sarayu joined Ganga not far from Pataliputra. While Son and Ganga surrounded it on the north and west, river Poonpun surrounded it on the south and west. It was a true water fort, hence it was called ‘jaladurga’. So, statement 1 is right and statement 2 is wrong.
