World Humanitarian Day is observed every year on 19 August. It pays tribute to humanitarian workers killed or injured in their work. It honors aid and health workers providing life-saving support to people in need. The day highlights the importance, effectiveness, and positive impact of humanitarian efforts. It was designated in memory of the 19 August 2003 bomb attack on the Canal Hotel in Baghdad, Iraq. The attack killed 22 people, including Sergio Vieira de Mello, the chief humanitarian in Iraq. In 2009, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) formalized the day.
