Adolf Gaston Eugen Fick
In 1888, German ophthalmologist Adolf Gaston Eugen Fick constructed and fitted the first successful contact lens. It was an afocal scleral contact shell made from heavy brown glass, which he tested first on rabbits, then on himself, and lastly on a small group of volunteers. It was 18–21 mm in diameter.
