Notes: As trade expanded, the company persuaded merchants and traders to come and settle near the factory. By 1696 it began building a fort around the settlement. Two years later it bribed Mughal officials into giving the company zamindari rights of three villages of Sutanuti, Gobindapur and Kalikat. English trader Job Charnock landed at Sutanuti on 24 August, 1690 with the objective of establ ishing the East India Company's, Bengal headquarters. As Kalikat did not have any settled native population, it was easy for the British to occupy the site.
