On March 29, 1857, Mangal Pandey, an Indian sepoy of 34 Native infantry, refused to use the greased cartridges and single- handedly attacked and killed British officers ( Hugeson and Baugh) on parade at Barrackpore. Later, he was arrested and hanged on April 8,1857 at Barrackpore. The regiment to which he belonged was disbanded and sepoys guilty of rebellion punished.
