Notes: Mulk Raj Anand wrote the novel Coolie in 1936. The book was Anand's second work and helped establish him as one of India's leading English authors. The novel is critical of British rule in India and the caste system. Coolie tells the story of Munoo, an orphan boy from the Kangra Hills in Bilaspur. Munoo lives with his aunt and uncle, but they can no longer support him and insist he get a job. Munoo travels to a nearby town with his uncle and finds work as a servant to a bank clerk. Munoo is mistreated by his master's wife, but he admires his master's younger brother, a doctor. Anand was a prominent Indian author of novels, short stories, and critical essays in English. He won the Sahitya Akademi Award (1971), Padma Bhushan (1967), and International Peace Prize (1953).
