Notes: Portuguese were the first European to enter Bihar. Portuguese mainly traded in spices for textile, especially cotton producing region. Portuguese established their first factory in 1579-80 in Hooghly region. Mughal Emperor gave permission to Portuguese captain Pedro Tavares to establish their factories.
In 1599, the Portuguese traders built a convent and a church in Bandel which was the first Christian church in Bengal known as ‘Bandel Church’ today.
