Dhondo Keshav Karve, popularly known as Maharshi Karve, was a social reformer in India in the field of women's welfare. He advocated widow remarriage and he himself married a widow. Karve was a pioneer in promoting widows' education. He founded the first women's university in India - SNDT Women's University.
Behramji Merwanji Malabari JP was an Indian poet, publicist, author, and social reformer best known for his ardent advocacy for the protection of the rights of women and for his activities against child marriage.
Gopal Ganesh Agarkar was one of the founders of the Deccan Education Society (24 October 1884) and the Fergusson College, Pune. He was the Editor of the English weekly the Mahratta and the Marathi weekly the Kesari. In 1888 he started his own weekly the Sudharak, the Marathi columns of which were written by him and the English ones by G.K.Gokhale. He battled to raise the age of marriage for boys to 20-22 years and for girls to 15-16 years.
Bal Gangadhar Tilak (Lokmanya) started the Marathi Kesari and its English counterpart Mahratta. He revived the Ganapati festival in 1894 and two years later the Shivaji festival (1896). He was one of the founders of the Poona Sarvajanik Sabha. He wrote Gita Rahasya, a commentary on the Bhagavadgita in the Mandalay prison in 1911.
