R.K. Shanmukham Chetty
India’s first finance minister, R.K. Shanmukham Chetty after independence, tabled the country’s first Union budget in Parliament on 26 November 1947. He was a lawyer, economist and politician. He was also India’s delegate to the World Monetary Conference at Bretton Woods in 1944. In the Constituent Assembly, Chetty made several interventions in defence of fiscal federalism, which is significant to his home state Tamil Nadu.
