Notes: Gir is a forest and wildlife sanctuary in Gujarat, established in 1965. Its region is the sole home of the Asiatic lion in the wilderness and is considered to be one of the most important protected areas in Asia due to its supported species. Biosphere Reserve (BR) is an international designation by UNESCO for representative parts of natural and cultural landscapes extending over large area of terrestrial or coastal/ marine ecosystems or a combination thereof. The Indian government has established 18 Biosphere Reserves of India, which protect larger areas of natural habitat.
