Ecuador is one of the seventeen megadiverse countries in the world and is also the most biodiversity per square kilometre of any nation. In 2007-2008, Ecuador rewrote its constitution and it was ratified by referendum by the people of Ecuador in September 2008.  In 2011, the first Rights of Nature court decision was issued in the Vilcabamba River Case in Ecuador, upholding the Rights of Nature constitutional provisions.
