The Bhabhar areas are covered with the deposits of coarse sands and pebbles brought down from the hills by the swift-flowing rivers. It is a narrow belt of about 8 to 16 km in width lying parallel to the slopes of the Shiwaliks. It is comparatively narrow in the east and extensive in the western and northwestern hilly region. The area is not suitable for agriculture and only big trees with large roots thrive in this belt.
