The book, ‘Kitab-ul-Hind’ was composed by Al-Beruni, written in Arabic, is divided into 80 chapters on subjects viz. religion and philosophy, festivals, astronomy, alchemy, manners and customs, social life, weights and measures, iconography, laws, metrology, etc. The book gives good account of the polity and society of India on the eve of Mahmud’s invasion.
