The first-ever motion to remove a Chief Justice of a High Court was moved against V. Ramaswami, the Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court, by the Supreme Court Bar Association on 1 February 1991. The BJP and Left parties submitted a notice of motion to the Indian Parliament in March 1991, seeking his removal from office. The removal motion was placed in the Lok Sabha for debate and voting on 10 May 1993. The motion was defeated due to abstentions by ruling Congress and its allies.
