Notes: The words "Socialist" and "Secular" were added to the Preamble through the Constitution (42nd Amendment) Act, 1976, during the period of Emergency under Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's government. Recently, it was claimed that the words “socialist” and “secular” were missing from the Preamble of the copies of the Constitution handed out to Member of Parliaments while moving to the new Parliament building.
