Notes: States Reorganization Act came into effect on November 1, 1956. The Act was enacted on August 31, 1956. Before it came into effect, the Seventh Amendment was made to the Constitution of India. The amendment changed the terminology of Part A, Part B, Part C, and Part D states.  The distinction between Part A and B states was removed.  The States Reorganization Act was intended to reform the boundaries of India. Before independence, India had 500 disjointed princely states.  The Act divided the country into 14 states and 6 union territories.  The states that were formed include Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, and Haryana. The union territories that were announced include Delhi, Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar, Puchcherry, and Chandigarh.
