Mudiyettu is a traditional dance drama of Kerala based on the mythological story of a fight between a demon named Kali Devi and Darika. It is a community practice involving the whole village. The villagers reach the temple early in the morning on the appointed day after harvesting in summer. Mudiyettu artists purify themselves through fasting and prayers and then create a huge image of the goddess Kali called Kalam with colored powder on the temple floor to inspire the spirit of the goddess.
