During the early medieval period, the social position of women declined relatively with few exceptions. The upper class women lived in seclusion and generally kept away from the public gaze. Still, there was no system of Purdah or veil. However, there were some women who ruled as queens in their own right, especially Kashmir and Orissa e.g. Queen Rudramadevi of Kakatiya dynasty and Queen Didda, who ruled in Kashmir for 50 years and withstood all intrigue against her. She ruled roughly from 958 CE to 1003 CE, for some time as a regent and then as a monarch in her own right.
