Notes: In the third Carnatic War (1758-63), the French Governor of Pondicherry, Count de Lally captured Fort St. David. Though, the French forces were badly defeated by British forces and lost all their possessions in India in the battle of Wandiwash (1760). After the war, the Treaty of Paris (1763) was signed. As per the treaty, Pondicherry, Karaikal and Mahe were restored to the French under the protection of the English.
