During the medieval period, there was plenty of surplus cultivable land available. So, it was very common for the cultivators to migrate to new areas. This especially happened at the time of crises. Zamindars and village headmen vied with each other to try to attract new cultivators to their lands. The movement of these migrant peasants called pahis or uparis was very common in the medieval rural life.
