Birsa Munda was a tribal leader and Lok Nayak. He belonged to Munda caste. In present-day India, the tribals of Ranchi and Singhbhum remember Birsa Munda as 'Birsa Bhagwan'. Birsa Munda earned this honor by raising the Munda tribals against the oppression of the British. Birsa proved to be a major link in the history of the Indian independence movement in the 19th century. Birsa died of cholera in 1900 and the Munda rebellion faded.
