Hiroshima Day is observed annually on August 6 to remember the victims and reflect on the human cost of nuclear warfare. On August 6, 1945, the United States dropped the world’s first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, during World War II (WWII). The nuclear bomb, codenamed "Little Boy", was delivered by a B-29 bomber and killed over 1.4 lakh (140,000) people. Japan marks the 80th anniversary of this tragic event on Hiroshima Day 2025. Three days later, the U.S. dropped a second bomb on Nagasaki, raising the death toll to over 2 lakh (200,000) by year-end. The destruction led Emperor Hirohito to announce Japan’s unconditional surrender on August 15, 1945, ending WWII.
