Situated along the border of Argentina and Chile, Aconcagua is the highest peak of Andes Mountains. It is a snow-capped extinct volcano rising to a height of 6960 m (22,834 ft.) above the sea level. It was first climbed by Edward A. Fitzgerald in 1897. It has vertical zones in its natural vegetation ranging from the deciduous forests at the foothills, pine and fir above 2000 m, and alpine pastures at higher altitudes.
