A Carbon Brief analysis based on Global Energy Monitor’s Coal Plant Tracker reported that China and India together accounted for nearly 88% of all new coal power capacity proposed globally in early 2025. China proposed 74.7 GW while India proposed 12.8 GW, compared with just 11 GW across the rest of the world combined. While both countries are also rapidly expanding solar and wind capacity, coal remains central to their energy security and industrial demand, complicating international climate goals.
