Notes: The richest 1% of Indians now control more than 40% of the nation's overall wealth, a new Oxfam International research claims, while the wealthiest 50% of citizens together own just 3% of the country's wealth. The first day of the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting saw the publication of the report, titled "Survival of the Richest." The country's marginalized, including Dalits, Adivasis, Muslims, women, and workers in the informal sector, continue to suffer in a system that ensures the survival of the wealthiest, according to Oxfam India CEO Amitabh Behar. He pleaded with the Union finance minister to enact progressive tax policies including wealth tax and inheritance tax, which he claimed had historically been shown to be successful in reducing inequality.
