For most part of India, topographic maps are available which are prepared by the Survey of India. To identify a map of a particular area, a map numbering system has been adopted by Survey of India. The Survey of India is India's central engineering agency in charge of mapping and surveying, set up in 1767. Its members are from Survey of India Service cadre of Civil Services of India. It is headed by the Surveyor General of India.
