Hideki Tojo, the Prime Minister of Japan during World War II, handed over Shaheed and Swaraj islands to the Azad Hind Government on November 6, 1943. Subsequently, Subhas Chandra Bose, a prominent leader of the Indian National Congress, renamed these islands on December 31, 1943. The Azad Hind Government was a pro-independence movement active during the last years of British colonial rule in India.
