Job Charnock is credited with the establishment of Calcutta (now Kolkata) in 1690. He was an employee and administrator of the English East India Company at the time. Recognizing the strategic advantages of the region, Charnock decided to build a factory on this location. Over the years, this modest beginning grew and Calcutta evolved into a major city and a hub for British trade and administration in India.
