Pelagos Sanctuary for the Mediterranean Marine Mammals, originally known as the International Ligurian Sea Cetacean Sanctuary, located in the Ligurian basin of the Mediterranean Sea. It is a marine protected area established through an agreement in 1999, between Italy, France and Monaco for the protection of marine mammals. The entire sanctuary can be broadly considered to be a biogeographically distinct sub-section of the Large Marine Ecosystem (LME) that is the Mediterranean. This sanctuary has been added to the Specially Protected Areas of Mediterranean Importance (SPAMI) list of the 1999 Barcelona Convention.
