Sarnath column depicts four animals representing the four cardinal directions: a horse (west), an ox (east), an elephant (south), and a lion (north). The circle of the Lion Capital on Sarnath Pillar represents progress. It takes the form of a wheel symbolizing the Eightfold Path. Sarnath pillar has been adopted as the national emblem of India. Sarnath is the site of Buddha’s First Sermon where he shared the Four Noble Truths. The capital is carved out of a single block of polished sandstone.
