Notes: Lord Dalhousie became Governor General in 1849 CE and served till 1856 CE. He was an ardent advocate of rapid railway construction. The first railway line was opened to traffic in 1853 CE. Postal rates were cut and a uniform rate of half an anna was charged for a letter all over the land.
