Notes: The Pala King Dharmapala (reign 775-810) founded Vikramshila University in the late 8th or early 9th century. The university was a Buddhist institution of higher learning in ancient India. It was located in present-day Kahalgaon, Bhagalpur, Bihar, in eastern India. Vikramshila University was intended to complement the existing world class universities at Nalanda and Takshila. It lasted four centuries before being destroyed during an attack by Bakhtiyar Khilji of the Delhi Sultanate. Vikramshila University was one of the three most significant Buddhist monasteries in India under the Pala Empire in the late 7th century. The other two were Nalanda and Odantapuri.
