Channapatna toysare a particular form of wooden toys and dolls that are manufactured in the town of Channapatna in the Ramanagara district of Karnataka. This traditional craft is protected as a geographical indication (GI) under the World Trade Organization, administered by the Government of Karnataka. Channapatna is known as the Gombegala Ooru (toy-town) of Karnataka. The Channapatna toys are made of specific wood, called “Aale Mara or the ivory wood”. Vegetable dyes are used for colors that are safe to use and environment-friendly.
Kinnal Craft is a traditional craft which has been done on wood. It is the local craft of Kinhal or Kinnal town in the Koppal District of Karnataka. It was awarded the Geographical Indication tag in 2012. The artisans of this craft are identified as Chitragars. The wood used by them is a local wood known as Polki Maran. The intricate carvings in the Hampi Chariot are believed to be a Kinnal Craft. The toys made by Kinhal craft have a signature gold and silver colour which is done by using a special technique named as Lajwara Technique.
The art of making Etikoppaka toys is over 400 years old and has been traditionally handed over to the artisans by their ancestors through generations. They are made from the soft wood of Ankudi Karra (Wrightia tinctoria) tree. The toys are painted with natural dyes, which is prepared from seed, lacquer, bark, roots and leaves. The dyes are non-toxic. The art of making such toys is known as turned wood Lacquer craft. Etikoppaka Toyshave obtained their GI tag (2017) under Handicrafts category in the state of Andhra Pradesh.
