Notes: Subhash Chandra Bose had escaped from India in March 1941 and he eventually reached Japan to organise an armed struggle against British rule with Japanese help. In Singapore, he formed the Indian National Army (INA) to conduct a military campaign for the liberation of India. He was assisted by Rash Behari Bose, an old terrorist revolutionary. Before the arrival of Subhash Bose, steps towards formation of the INA had been taken by General Mohan Singh, who had been a Captain in the British Indian Army. He had decided to stay back when the British forces were retreating from Singapore. He took the charge of surrendered Indian troops from Japanese and exhorted them to join in the cause of freedom struggle.
