Notes: The Raman effect is the inelastic scattering of photons by matter. When a monochromatic light beam propagates in an optical fibre, spontaneous Raman scattering transfers some of the photons to new frequencies. Unlike incident light, this scattered light undergoes a spectral shift by an amount equivalent to the resonance frequency of the lattice oscillation.
