Lord Mayo, the viceroy of India during 1869-1872, was assassinated by Sher Ali Afridi, an Afridi Pathan convict at Port Blair in the Andaman Islands on 8 February 1972. His murderer appeared to be motivated only by a sense of injustice at his own imprisonment, and had resolved to kill a high-ranking colonial official.
