Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act
The Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act, enacted in 1956 and amended in 2008, allows Parliament to determine the number of judges. The Chief Justice of India can recommend changes to address judicial backlogs. Interestingly, the Constitution does not specify a fixed number of judges for High Courts. This is determined by the President based on workload and in consultation with the Chief Justice of India.
