cold water current in Pacific Ocean
Kamchatka Current is a cold-water current in the northeastern Pacific Ocean. It flows southwestward from the Bering Strait, along the Siberian Pacific coast and the Kamchatka Peninsula. The current is also known as the East Kamchatka Current. The Kamchatka Current acts like a conveyor belt, bringing cold water to the Northeastern part of Japan. The current flows at speeds of 0.2–0.3 m s-1. The Kamchatka Current originates in the Bering Sea. A portion of the current becomes the Oyashio Current, while the remainder joins the warmer North Pacific Current. The Kamchatka Peninsula is part of the Kamchatka Krai of the Russian Federation. The peninsula is famous for its volcanoes, with more than 300 volcanoes, including 28 to 36 active or potentially active volcanoes
