Recently, Italian luxury brand Prada admitted its Men’s Spring/Summer 2026 sandals were inspired by traditional Indian handcrafted footwear after criticism about copying India’s Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged Kolhapuri chappals. Kolhapuri chappals originated from Kolhapur, Maharashtra, and have been made since the 13th century. They are handmade leather sandals known for their intricate designs and open-toed T-strap style. They use 100% leather from cow, buffalo, or goat.
