It is situated on the banks of the Betwa river, 46 km northeast of Bhopal, and 10 km from Besnagar and Vidisha in the central part of Madhya Pradesh. There are many Buddhist monuments here, which date back to the 3rd century BC. from the middle of the twelfth century. Sanchi is a Nagar Panchayat in Raisen District.
