Notes: Cote d'Ivoire gained independence from France in 1960. French rule got established in Ivory Coast in the mid-19th century. Through a treaty with King of Grand Bassam, French admiral made the territories of Ivory Coast a French protectorate. Felix Houphouet-Boigny became Ivory Coast's/Cote d'Ivoire's Father of Independence. He fought against French colonial policy of injustice towards local Ivorians. In 1958, Ivory Coast became an autonomous member of the French community which leads to independence in 1960.
