Notes: Dhamma is a set of edicts that formed a policy of Ashoka, the mauryan emperor. The Code of ethics that Ashoka told for the moral development of his kingdom was called 'Dhamma' in inscriptions. Ashoka's second and seventh pillar inscriptions described about the qualities that formed Dhamma. According to Ashoka Dhamma was based on religious tolerance, respect to elders, care for the old ones, kindness towards the needy, purity and truthfulness , no Killing of animals.
