Q. Consider the following statements with respect to the Khilafat movement:
- It started on the issue of mistreatment of the Caliph.
- Gandhiji was given ‘Kaiser-i-Hind’ title for his services during World War I, which he returned when the Khilafat movement started.
Which of the above is / are correct?
Answer:
Both 1 and 2
Notes: The politically conscious Muslims were critical of the treatment meted out to the Ottoman Empire by Britain and its allies who had partitioned it and taken away ‘Thrace’ from Turkey proper. A Khilafat committee was formed under leadership of the Ali brothers, Maulana Azad, Hakim Ajmal and Hasrat Mohani and a country-wide agitation was organized. So, statement 1 is correct. The Khilafat Committee launched a non-cooperation movement in August 1920. Gandhiji was the first to join it as he returned the 'Kaiser-i-Hind' Medal awarded to him earlier for services during the war. So, statement 2 is correct.
