Notes: Farrukhsiyar issued a farman that allowed the company to issue dastaks that exempted companies import-export trade from custom duty. Senior officials of the company could issue dastaks. Originally this privilege was limited to Bengal, but Farrukh Siyar extended it to the whole empire. These dastaks could be used only for import-export trade and only for the purposes of company. But, the corrupt company officials used it for private and inland trade also. These dastaks were sold to the Indian merchants as well. Obviously, such a behaviour meant loss of considerable revenue to the local governments like the rulers of Bengal. But, the strong Bengal nawabs regularly compelled the company to submit lump sum amounts for the loses. The matter came to a head under the rule of young and impulsive Siraj ud Daulah.
