Q. Consider the following pairs of Indus Valley Civilization sites and their respective special features:
- Mohenjodaro – Great Bath
- Mohenjodaro – Fragment of a woven cloth
- Chanudaro – City without a citadel
- Kalibangan – Fire altars
Which of the pairs given above are matched correctly?
Answer:
1, 2, 3 & 4
Notes:
- Mohenjodaro: The Great Bath of Mohenjodaro. It must have served as a ritual bathing site. The Great Granary found here is the largest building. It is located within the citadel, and next to the Great Bath. There is also present an oblong multipillared assembly hall and a big rectangular building which must have served administrative purposes. A fragment of a woven cloth was also discovered.
- Chanhudaro: It was the only Indus city without a citadel. Like Mohenjodaro, it was also flooded more than once. A small pot was discovered here, which was probably an ink pot.
- Kalibangan: It is one of the two Indus cities which have both proto-Harappan and Harappan cultural phases. In its proto-Harappan phase the fields were ploughed. But in the Harappan phase, they were not ploughed, but dug up. Archaeologists discovered two platforms (within the citadel) with fire altars suggesting the practice of the cult of sacrifice.
