September 23, 2015 at 11:55 pmSir one general question…
Sir who fix the rate of Sugarcane per ton… Should farmers abide the rate fixed by Govt/A Corporate body…?
& Why there is pending of bill by Sugar factories…. Does Govt has no responsibility to remove grievance of farmers….
Due to pending of Bills many farmers attempted/committed Suicide…
Sir please explain…. This question may be silly but felt like asking….
Suresh Soni
September 24, 2015 at 10:25 amHello Ahmed,
The FRP (Fair and Remunerative Price ) is fixed by Centre (CCEA) on recommendation of Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP) after taking into consideration the margins for sugarcane farmers, based on the cost of production of sugarcane, including the cost of transportation. States fix SAP (State Advised Price). Usually states like UP fix this price above the FRP. So problem in that state is not for farmers but for the sugar factories. So, you don’t find much distress in sugarcane farmers in Uttar Pradesh. Currently, most sugarcane farmers suicides are happening in Karnataka I think.
The major issue of conflict of interest between government and industry. Governments want to keep rates higher to support farmers that is good. But then, who will buy sugarcane? Its industry which will buy at price mandated by the Government. They will buy it , but what if they have no money to immediately pay? So payments go into arrears and arrears keep piling up. I hope you got the issue.

September 24, 2015 at 12:36 pmSir One more question just arise… Plz make it clear…..
Sir Commission for Agricultural Costs & Prices (CACP) has any Constitutional Status….? or is just appointed by Centre to come up with a general consensus for fixing prices….
Suresh Soni
September 24, 2015 at 12:43 pmIt is neither constitutional nor a statutory body. It was established by on the basis of recommendations of LK Jha committee (aka. Foodgrains Price Commitee) in 1965 and at that time it was called Agricultural Prices Commission. It was later renamed as CACP in 1985. This is discussed in next module.

September 24, 2015 at 6:11 pmSir, one more question…
In your module one, you have mentioned the percentage of vegetarians as 42 or somewhere near.
How did you get these figures?
I think in Census blank form, there was no mention of food habits of individuals.
Suresh Soni
September 24, 2015 at 6:30 pmHello,
This is not a Census figure, its an NSSO figure rather. The particular numbers in my document appear from this article, which is one of many which I used to write this module.

September 25, 2015 at 3:58 pmSir, I want some clarification on “India’s Agricultural Imports” section in this module. Since edible oil is mentioned as largest import in above section, can we read in this section as import and not export and any other corrections needed here?

On Page-11 its a correction; export was typo (its import). Please check the document should show correction.

Regarding sugarcane industry, in the graphics you have shown the comparison after and before rangrajan committee and govt decisions. Just below the graphics, “abolition of the levy system” is mentioned, but it is not crossed/marked in after April 2013 scenario. is it because it has been abolished for 2 years or some other reasons?
Please clarify.

What will be answer for Pulses?
1) Rabi 2) Kharif 3) Zaid
Suresh Soni
October 1, 2015 at 11:49 amHello Maheep, pulses are grown in Rabi , Kharif as well as Zaid seasons. Gram, pea, Khesari and lentil constitute the major rabi pulses, while redgram, blackgram, greengram, horsegram and moth comprise the Kharif pulses. The area as well as production is more in case of Kharif Pulses. Moong and urad are also grown as Zaid Crops.
maheep2005
October 1, 2015 at 7:36 pmSir my question is if pulses is given in option i think one question already asked UPSC in which pulses was mentioned in question.

September 26, 2015 at 10:41 pmIn module it is mentioned that In 1966, India imported high yield varieties of wheat from use during Green Revolution. My question is which other crops seeds (other than wheat )also imported by India during same period.
Suresh Soni
September 29, 2015 at 8:00 pmHello Maheep, 18,000 tons of HYV wheat seeds were imported from Mexico; and at that time, I believe only wheat was brought from Mexico. Along with this some other such as IR-8 of rice was imported from IRRI but that rice was not suitable for Indian environment.
maheep2005
September 29, 2015 at 8:06 pmThat means sir if both options (Rice & wheat) is mentioned in answer choice, answer will be wheat only.
Suresh Soni
September 29, 2015 at 8:07 pmI think this fact does not make any sensible objective question.

November 9, 2015 at 11:00 pmHello Sir,
I’m thankful that these new documents are made in kindle-friendly format. But the GS manuals 2014 are having some font encoding issues. When I open in Kindle, I see strange characters coming in.
Even on laptop, I cant even search for any text in the main topic, apart from the dialog boxes where the font is different. Little bit of googling helped me figure out the problem is with font-mapping in the pdf. Probably font of main content is not mapped properly.
Is there any viable option for accessing the manual content on kindle ?
Or at least, Can I get the fonts used in the document, which might help me to solve that font-mapping issue ?
And when we are provided with new manuals, please try to minimise usage of icons for bullet points. Kindly try to use default icons ( circle, numbers etc ) instead.

November 9, 2015 at 11:54 pmHello, previously we used to work on ms word so many fonts I used. Click control + d on file to see what fonts are there in particular file. The current format has only 5 font and is more tab friendly. looking forward to making it mobile friendly.

December 23, 2015 at 2:54 pmHello Sir,
One statement says ….
27% of Total population = Agril workers as per 1951 census and that marginally came down to 21.7 % as per 2011 census ..
But usually we say 60% of people dependent on Agriculture but they contribute ~18% of GDP..
Aren’t the statements contradictory ?.
Suresh Soni
December 23, 2015 at 7:12 pmI have written: The above data also demystifies the false notion that half of Indiaβs population is involved in agriculture. Its a myth actually. The fact is that 54 per cent of total workers and 42% of rural workers is still part of the agriculture sector but they are not all farmers or cultivators.
