Bring out the key differences between two types of services — standard positioning service and restricted service to be provided by NavIC.

India launched its own navigation service known as NAVIC (Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS). It consists of constellation of seven satellites. NAVIC will provide two levels of service, the ‘standard positioning service’ will be open for civilian use, and a ‘restricted service’ for authorized users (including military).
Standard positioning service

  • NavIC will provide standard positioning service to all users with a position accuracy of 5 metre. The GPS, on the other hand, has a position accuracy of 20-30 metre,
  • NavIC is not dependent on any model to find the frequency error and is more accurate than GPS which depends on atmospheric model to assess frequency as it depends on only one frequency
  • Aid terrestrial, aerial and marine navigation, vehicle tracking and fleet management, disaster management, mapping and geodetic data capture, visual and voice navigation for drivers
  • It can be used on mobile phones like GPS by using Navic enabled chips.

Restricted service

  • America had stopped GPS services during KArgil war hence the need for own navigation System.
  • The restricted service will also be used by the military for missile delivery and navigation and tracking of aircrafts.
  • It would help in the movement of troops during war
  • This service will not be available to civilians.
